Why is there such a big discrepancy between the word count at the bottom of my Word doc. The latter is the same as what Turnitin says the word count was, and is the number of words counted for my study.

When I transferred the essay into text only and then copied it back into Word, the discrepancy disappeared. I am using a Mac. Safe mode is problematic. What is the Mac option?
